Abstract
In this study , authors investigated the inhibitory effect of Phellodendri cortex L. on the growth and the acid production of Streptococcus mutans JC-2 in order to develop anti-dental caries agent. Some organic acid also were analyzed by HPLC.
The
water
extract of Phellodendri cortex L. showed antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans JC-2. Titratable acidity of cultures in the absence of Phellodendri cortex L. was higher than that in the presence of Phellodendri cortex L.(500, 1000,
2000ppm). Major organic acid produced by Streptococcus mutans JC-2 was lactic acid and its contents increased 0.170 to 0.482% after 48hr of incubation. Contents of succinic, malic and propionic acid increased slightly, but there is no change in
the
contents of acetic and citric acid.
